"Fixing Screenagers" Presentation - Wednesday 3rd May 6:45pm

Sure Optical - Thursday, April 27, 2017

2 out of 3 children spend more than 2 hours a day using digital devices. This concerns most parents. Excessive use of iPads, iPhones and other screens are causing problems with children’s necks, posture and eyes. Central Coast Spinal Care Centre and Sure Eye Care are holding an educational seminar to answer your concerns.

The talk will begin with Chiropractors Dr Angus Steventon and Dr Bryce Conrad, who'll speak about:

  • The implications of “TechNeck” and “iPosture” on the adult and child spine
  • How to minimise impact and reduce neck pain, headaches and the development of a “hunch back”

Next, Optometrists Dr Amanda Rungis and Dr Sarah Tait will talk about:

  • The epidemic of short-sightedness putting our kids at risk and how it relates to excessive screen time
  • Treatments that help slow short-sightedness
  • Blue light protection - why it's important that we protect our kids from blue light emitted in excessive amounts from screens

There will be plenty of time at the end of the talk to answer your questions.

Spaces are limited so book online now or call 4337 6000 to avoid disappointment.  All proceeds from the evening will be donated to Optometry Giving Sight.

Dry eye – there's hope!

Amanda Rungis - Thursday, April 20, 2017

Do you suffer from dry eyes? Do your eyes water excessively? Have you been given eye drops but they just don’t seem to work?

I understand completely. I have had dry eye since my early 20s. So I am always searching for the latest treatments available.

Dry eye symptoms can be caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). MGD occurs when glands along the upper and lower eyelids are blocked. This reduces the amount of oil (meibum) in the tear film, resulting in poor tear quality and increased evaporation of the tears.

We have just invested in innovative technology to treat dry eye - Blephasteam®. This is an in-practice therapy used to treat MGD and relieve the symptoms of dry eyes. It involves gently heating the eyelids and then massage of the glands. This encourages melting of the blocked meibum and results in better tear quality.

Blephasteam is very safe and effective, though not very fashionable (see photo of me below). Anybody with MGD will benefit from Blephasteam therapy. Also, people with other conditions such as blepharitis, chalazion, dry eyes, contact lens intolerance and ocular rosacea may also benefit.

Each session takes 15 minutes and most patients require at least 3 sessions. Extra relief of dry eye symptoms will be achieved with at-home treatments such as:

  • Lubricating eye-drops
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Eyelid cleansers
  • Eye masks

Dry eye is preventable or treatable. If dry eyes bother you, now is the time to book a dry eye consultation. You can book online or call 4337 6000 and speak to one of my wonderful team members.
